Uninsured Drivers - How They Affect Your Rates

At ReduceMyInsurance.net, we know our customers want low prices, great coverage, and exemplary customer service. While we can help you determine which company is best for your insurance needs, we unfortunately do not control insurance rates. While most Tennessee residents, roughly 80%, keep active, satisfactory auto insurance policies, there are many people who do not keep active policies. The remaining 20% of Tennessee's drivers who do not have auto insurance have significant influence on the prices of car insurance in Tennessee.

20% of Tennessee drivers do not carry auto insurance. This means that 1 in 5 drivers are uninsured. What does that mean for you, the responsible citizen who does have auto insurance? Let's look at a realistic scenario. (Note: this is not a true story)

Driver A, who we'll call Bob, carries an active auto insurance policy with liability and uninsured motorist coverage. However, Driver B, who we'll call Dave, does not have car insurance. Dave, while following too closely, accidentally rear-ends Bob on a busy highway. Both cars pull off to the side of the road, and Bob calls the police. While the drivers are waiting and after both have made sure they're not injured, Bob says, "Hi, I'm Bob, could you please show me your insurance ID card? I'd like to go ahead and get a claim filed. That's a lot of damage to my car." Dave doesn't respond. Instead, he looks around nervously and gets back into his car.

The police arrive and talk with Bob first. Bob provides an explanation of what happened. The officer talks with Dave next. When the officer discovers that Dave does not have car insurance, the officer writes him a ticket and warns him that his license will be suspended if he fails to obtain satisfactory auto insurance.

Since Bob has uninsured motorist coverage, he files a claim with his own company to make repairs to his vehicle. Unfortunately, there's a $200 deductible for any uninsured motorist claim, and the claim takes much longer to process and provide payment to Bob because his insurance company has to verify that Dave indeed does not have auto insurance.

What if Bob didn't have uninsured motorist coverage? He would then be responsible for all damages out of his own pocket. Sadly, the statistics are not favorable. Considering that 1 in 5 of all drivers in Tennessee do not have car insurance, it's important that you keep an active auto policy including uninsured motorist coverage. The more drivers that do not carry auto insurance, the higher the rates are for those that do keep active auto insurance policies.

If you have ever had an experience with an uninsured motorist before, please let us know how the claim was handled below in the comments. We appreciate any and all feedback to ensure that we provide the best service possible and consistently improve our services.
