Backyard Fireworks Safety Tips

Fireworks are a must-have for summer weekends including the Fourth of July, and you want to have the best backyard show on the block. But there is more to lighting up the night sky with the 1812 Overture; every year thousands of people and pets are injured because of DIY fireworks. Your best bet is to attend a professional event in your area but if you really want to have your own show, these tips will keep you safe.
  • Always check with your local area for by-laws and note any particular bans due to very dry weather; follow the rules!
  • Never set off fireworks during windy conditions.
  • Buy your fireworks from a reputable dealer; either a retail outlet or some of the temporary firework kiosks that may pop-up in your area. Avoid buying from someone simply selling out of the back of their vehicle and beware to fireworks that are ‘too cheap.’
  • Use fireworks within your range of experience; some great effects occur with ‘super’ fireworks but they require more skill and diligence to handle properly. Read and follow all instructions.
  • Examine your fireworks to any signs of damage or tampering; avoid using left-over fireworks from previous years.
  • Have one person in charge of setting off the fireworks, someone who is responsible, capable, and able to deal with emergencies – it goes without saying this person should not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
  • Set up a designated area far away from your house and any trees or dry grass and keep all guests, children and pets out of the way.
  • Set off fireworks one at a time; avoid lighting all at once and trying to do too much. This is one reason professional shows are your best ‘bang for your buck.’
  • Have a water hose and pail of water at hand to help deal with any mishaps or ‘dud’ fireworks. Any duds should be immersed in a bucket of water for at least 30 minutes-never try to re-light a dud.
  • Kids love sparklers but they are too dangerous to handle; NEVER allow kids to throw firecrackers at each other!
  • Remove as much debris as possible after the show and watch out for potential hot-spots; sweep the area again the next day during better lighting conditions.
  • Dispose of fireworks according to manufacturers’ instructions and municipal regulations.
